Description

Exceptional French antique (late 19thC) patinated bronze racehorse and jockey, ‘Retour au Pasage’ by Jules Moigniez (183501894). A beautifully modelled and cast bronze depicting the jockey leaning forwards with his right hand to stroke the horse's neck, on a cast oval base inscribed with the title and signed J. Moigniez. 33cm high x 39cm long x 12cm deep, weight 5.95kg.

Excellent condition and condition.

Jules Moigniez was born in Senlis, France. He was a student of Paul Comolera and his attraction to bird sculpture comes from his studies with his teacher. He was one of the leading French animalier sculptors whose most common subjects were game birds but he also sculpted dogs, horses and a few equestrian groups. He exhibited regularly at the annual French Salons from 1859 until 1892 showing a total of thirty works. Moigniez was a successful sculptor in France as well as in England and the USA, where the majority of his game bird sculptures were sold.
