The Georgian era spans the reigns of the first four British monarchs named George, from 1714 to 1830. Furniture from this period is characterised by classical proportions, sophisticated craftsmanship, and a transition from heavy walnut to imported timbers like mahogany.

Authentic pieces were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods such as oak or pine. Traditional construction relies heavily on hand-cut dovetail joints for drawer assembly and mortise and tenon joinery for the frame.

Authentic items exhibit hand-cut dovetails, irregular grain patterns consistent with hand-sawn timber, and signs of age-related oxidisation, shrinkage, and wear on internal components. Hardware such as brass drop handles and escutcheons should also match the construction period.

This piece works effectively as a focal point in a bedroom or living space, pairing well with neutral walls and contemporary art to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking and fading. Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and periodically applying traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
