Antique Yomut Turkmen Asmalyk, Bridal Camel Decoration, Mid 19th Century.

19th century
Description

Size: 4ft 2in x 2ft 7in (126 x 78cm).

Antique Yomut Turkmen asmalyk with 'tree' design.

Mid 19th century.

This superb example of a Yomut Turkmen asmalyk has the very scarce 'tree' design, also known as the 'gapyrga' design.

Asmalyk were used to decorate the flanks of the camels in the Yomut Turkmen wedding procession, they usually formed part of the brides dowry and were woven in pairs. They were prized possessions and often displayed hanging inside the yurt.

The weave is very fine and the asmalyk has a soft floppy handle. The dye quality is excellent, with some very subtle tones especially in the indigo blue.

The asmalyk is in original condition with slight even wear and good pile, it retains some of the original tassels, there are a few very minor spots of old moth damage that are very hard to find, but I have reflected this in the price.

The asmalyk has been hand washed and is ready for display.

Stock Number: H-559.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Asmalyk is a decorative five-sided textile woven by Turkmen nomadic tribes, traditionally created in pairs to adorn the sides of a brides camel during wedding processions before being kept as family heirlooms.

Traditional pieces feature hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a wool foundation, coloured with natural vegetable dyes such as madder root and indigo.

Authentic 19th-century Turkmen textiles are identified by their asymmetric knotting, saturated natural dye palettes, supple handle, and traditional tribal motifs such as serrated leaf or chevron field designs.

These pentagonal textiles serve as focal points when mounted and displayed as wall art above sideboards, mantelpieces, or in hallway alcoves to add texture and historical character.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight and damp conditions, vacuum gently with suction only, and consult a professional textile conservator for specialised cleaning or mounting.
