A chaise longue, often referred to as a fainting couch, is an upholstered sofa in the form of a chair with a long seat large enough to support the legs, popularised during the Victorian era for formal drawing rooms.

Victorian frames were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, supported by internal webbing, horsehair stuffing, and traditional coil springs.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-turned wooden legs, brass castors, traditional joinery methods, and layered stuffing such as hessian, horsehair, and wool under the upholstery.

Such pieces serve as a striking focal point in a living room or bedroom, and can be paired with neutral walls and modern textiles to balance historic character with contemporary aesthetics.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber drying and fabric degradation, alongside regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment.
