Concarneau; a Brittany Fishing Port, Ca 1930 French Post Impressionist Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

This engaging French harbour scene, dating to the 1930s, very likely depicts Concarneau, with its distinctive church spire rising above a cluster of closely packed Breton houses. The viewpoint, looking across the water towards the town, gives the composition a natural sense of depth.

The handling is lively and assured: brushwork is loose but controlled, with forms simplified just enough to lend structure without losing their character. The palette—soft greys, sandy ochres and pale blues—beautifully captures the atmosphere of a cloudy coastal day, while touches of brighter colour in the façades and reflections bring luminosity to the scene.

There is a meandering charm in the rhythm of the moored boats and the gentle curve of the quay, leading the eye through the composition towards the town beyond. With both decorative appeal and a strong sense of place, the painting is effortlessly attractive.

The work is unsigned, and while the artist remains unidentified, it sits firmly in the tradition of French post impressionist painting.

There is evidence of old repair to the canvas and stretcher, but the painting has been restored and presents well. Measuring 50 x 65 cm for the canvas, the overall size in a simple but well-chosen frame is 54 x 69 cm.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Post-Impressionism expanded beyond Impressionism by emphasizing structural form, expressive colour, and textured application of paint to convey atmosphere rather than strict optical realism.

Artists during this period predominantly used oil paint pigments bound with linseed oil applied directly onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, often utilizing impasto techniques to build physical surface texture.

Authenticity is identified through characteristic impasto brushwork, era-appropriate canvas weave, period artist signatures or gallery stamps, and natural surface craquelure or age-related varnish oxidisation.

Position the artwork as a focal point above a timber sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantel, complementing the muted palette with natural linen textiles and minimalist furniture.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and direct heat sources, dusting the surface gently with a soft dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners or chemical solvent treatments.
