At the Seaside, Ca 1920: The Boxer, the Photographer and the Lady in White, Fauve Oil on Canvas

1900 - 1920
Description

A lady photographer taking the picture of a boxer in an orange bathing suite on a beach, while an elegant lady in a floating white dress is walking past. Painted in high octane fauve colours, this painting from the 1920s creates a wonderful juxtaposition between a nostalgic, old world subject matter, and a modernism that would put many a contemporary artist to shame.

While the work is unsigned, I am certain that the work was painted by

Charles Kiffer-Porte (1902 –1992), as our painting very closely resembles his work from the 1920. A photo of a signed work by the artist is attached for reference. Charles Kiffer was a painter and engraver known for the high sensitivity of his art.

He had attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying with Cormon and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries in Paris.

His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics, and also illustrated posters for many stars such as Charles Trénet , Edith Piaf and Yves Montand .

Our oil on canvas measures 55 x 46 cm. The overall framed size in a vintage whitewashed wooden frame is 72 x 61 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fauvism originated in the early 1900s and is defined by vivid, non-naturalistic colours, simplified forms, and expressive brushstrokes that emphasise painterly qualities over realistic representation.

Oil paintings from this period were typically executed with organic oil-based pigments applied to hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas and secured onto wooden stretcher bars.

Authentic works from this period often display natural craquelure across the paint layer, age-appropriate darkening of the underlying canvas, and period-correct brush technique or signature styles.

Position the canvas as a focal point above a neutral sideboard or mantelpiece to allow the bold colour palette and expressive figures to create dynamic contrast against contemporary decor.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, and clean gently with a soft dry brush rather than liquid cleaners or damp cloths.
