A Sculptural, Abstracted Nude, Ca 1947 Lightly Cubist Modernist Oil on Canvas

Description

This lightly cubist, abstracted nude was painted in the 1940s, during, or not long after the war. Materials were scare, and the artist had to make do with a previously used canvas, so that the painting is double sided.

Our chunky, sculptural figure is seated by a stylised waterfall, near a vessel. But while the references are classical, the treatment and colours are resolutely modern. French in origin, the picture is unsigned, but is similar in style to works by Louis Latapie (1891-1972).

An oil on canvas, the work of art measures 41 x 33 cm. The overall size in a whitened oak frame is 48 x 40 cm.
