A fine oil on canvas depicting pollarded willows at twilight by the Scottish artist Alexander William Wellwood Rattray 1849-1902. The work is typical of the artist with an ethereal feel to the piece and a light wispy use of the brush. The painting is in excellent untouched condition and is signed to the lower left. Alexander William Wellwood Rattray (1849-1902) was born and educated in Glasgow at Glasgow University and the Glasgow School of Art. He was a devoted landscape painter in oils and watercolour, painting mainly in the Highlands, the East coast of Scotland and in the Mull of Kintyre. He exhibited works at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Watercolour Society and every other major gallery. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours, the New English Art Club, and was made an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1896.
