Antique Baluch saddle bag face with 'tile' design.

Circa 1900.

The saddle bag face is of well known 'tile' design. The bag face has superb soft glossy wool and a floppy handle. The bag face retains the original upper and lower end finishes with very fine detailed weft work decoration.

The saddle bag face is in excellent condition with very slight even wear and good pile.

Baluch saddle bag faces, or khorjin faces, were woven by nomadic Baluch tribes inhabiting the border regions of Persia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Originally designed as functional double bags for transport and storage during nomadic migrations, the front faces were heavily knotted with decorative geometric patterns.

These textiles were traditionally hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both warp and pile, occasionally incorporating camel or goat hair. Weavers utilized natural vegetable dyes to achieve dark red, navy blue, and aubergine hues, finishing the edges with flatwoven kilim skirts and dark selvedges.
