Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian 1890 king-size bedstead is constructed from cast iron, wrought iron, and brass with a jet black japanned lacquer finish. The frame incorporates vertical arched spindles, central diamond castings, brass top rails, brass finials, and decorative brass collars depicting flowers and leaves, accompanied by gilded transfers. The frame measures 139.5 cm high, 153 cm wide, and 213 cm deep, and accommodates a standard king-size mattress. Restored in workshops with all joints checked for a secure fit, the side rails are adapted to support wood slats or a bed base. Suitable for placement in a bedroom as a central sleeping furniture piece, the design coordinates with period and Gothic interior schemes while providing functional daily use.

FAQs

Japanned iron bedsteads are Victorian and Edwardian metal bed frames coated with a dark enamel lacquering technique known as japanning, designed to imitate East Asian lacquerware. Popularised in the 19th century, these frames combined fireproof cast iron durability with decorative brass flourishes.

Victorian bedsteads were typically constructed using cast iron for the decorative joinery and wrought iron for the horizontal rails. Heavy brass tubing was added to top rails, accompanied by solid brass finials, collars, and decorative mounts fixed onto iron rods.

Authentic 19th-century metal beds feature cast iron corner joints, often referred to as dovetail drop-in joints or cleats, where side rails slot directly into the posts without modern bolts. They also exhibit hand-cast decorative motifs, solid brass finials, and genuine age-related oxidisation.

Pairing a black japanned iron bedstead with crisp white linen bedding creates a striking contrast that highlights the architectural metalwork. Layering with neutral textured wool throws and natural timber bedside tables helps balance the industrial metalwork with tactile warmth.

Clean the metal frame using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust without stripping the japanned finish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on the brass work; instead, preserve the aged patina using a light coat of microcrystalline wax rubbed gently on the surface.
