This mid-century expressionist painting by Peter Jackson is an original oil on canvas from 1950, capturing a standing nude figure. The composition employs impasto brushwork with expressive, angular forms, and displays a dynamic palette of red, orange, yellow, and blue tones. The brushstrokes are thick and heavily textured, creating a sense of movement within the figure and background, complemented by rectangular framed motifs and a dark vertical shadow shape. Measuring 85 cm high and 55 cm wide, the artwork is presented on an unframed rectangular canvas stretcher. In a contemporary interior, this piece is ideally suited for display above a sideboard in a living room, dining area, or hallway to add vibrant mid-century modern character to the wall space.

FAQs

Mid-century expressionist figurative art focuses on representing the human form using bold colour choices, visible brushwork, and simplified or angular geometry rather than precise anatomical realism.

Paintings from this period were predominantly executed using oil paints applied to natural flax or cotton canvas stretched over wooden stretcher bars.

Authenticity is evaluated by inspecting the age of the wooden stretcher bars, consistent oxidisation on the canvas back, artist signatures or monogram marks, and period-appropriate paint layering.

Statement figurative paintings function well as single focal points above mid-century credenzas or as part of a curated gallery wall in neutral, minimalist, or maximalist room schemes.

Canvas paintings should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, kept away from direct sunlight, and displayed in a climate-controlled environment to prevent canvas warping.
