Description

From a local farmhouse ,a super original early/ mid 18th century oak serving dresser base.

It measures 196cms long 75cms high and 49cms deep.

Dating from the early georgian period c1740 on thick chunky turned legs.

Unusual to have turned legs at the rear. Always a sign of quality.

The wooden bun handles are c1820 but we love these knobs so have chosen to keep them ( simple)

These pieces were used in country houses to serve food off hence the name "servers"

In todays houses they have many varied uses including hallway pieces ,behind sofas , dining room etc.

The colour and patina are superb, a deep rich colour see pics

A low dresser base is a traditional piece of utility furniture originating in British country houses and farmhouses, historically used for food preparation and storing tableware before fitted kitchens became common.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from native British hardwoods such as oak, elm, fruitwood, and pine, often featuring hand-turned wooden knobs and peg joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, pit-sawn timber marks, wooden pegged joints, and natural patination developed through centuries of use.

An antique dresser base works effectively as a functional sideboard in a dining room or hallway, providing a grounding contrast against neutral walls and minimalist modern furnishings.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically treating the surface with traditional beeswax to nourish the timber and preserve the patina.
