John Atkinson "Appleby Fair" Watercolour

1900 - 1920
Description

John Atkinson 1863-1924 was born in Newcastle. He painted in oil and watercolour and was also considered a good printmaker. Subjects include landscapes and animal subjects, his most collected works being horse fairs and gypsy encampments. He attended classes at the School of Art, Newcastle and in 1900 became a full time professional artist after establishing a reputation from frequent exhibitions at the Berwick Club, Newcastle. He moved to Glaisdale where he remained until just before the First World War. He returned to Newcastle in 1914 where he set up a studio and practised until his death in 1924. Atkinson exhibited widely throughout his career including the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, the Institute of Painters in Watercolour and at many provincial galleries and exhibitions.

The present painting "Appleby Fair, 1919" is an attractive example. A watercolour with bodycolour measuring 11" x 15", it is signed lower left and is framed giving an overall size of 21"x 27".
