This pair of Victorian horse head hitching posts dates from 1880 and falls under architectural salvage. The items are formed from cast iron with a dark brown finish. Each sculpture depicts an equine head profile featuring a detailed mane, a moulded pedestal base, and a metal ring positioned in the mouth. The casting shows visible texture along the neck, defined facial muscles, and distinct locks of hair flowing down the side, complemented by rounded concentric rings around the circular base. Measuring 30 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, these heavy elements are proportioned for domestic placement. In a contemporary home, this pair functions as decorative bookends or sculptural display objects within a gentleman's library or study. The flat circular bases allow the pieces to sit stably on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table. The dark metallic surface coordinates easily with traditional wood finishes, leather upholstery, and classic architectural details. The substantial weight of the cast iron provides practical utility for holding books upright while introducing equestrian character to interior spaces.

Victorian hitching posts were functional outdoor fixtures positioned along kerbsides and outside buildings to secure horses while their riders were visiting establishments.

These posts were produced by pouring molten iron into sand moulds created from carved wooden master patterns, resulting in heavy, durable ironwork with detailed surface imagery.

Authentic pieces generally feature crisp moulding details, heavy visual mass, seamless casting lines, and subtle surface patination or oxidisation built up over extended exposure to weather.

These cast iron elements are commonly repurposed as decorative bookends, mantlepiece ornaments, table centres, or architectural accents on sideboards and bookshelves.

Maintain cast iron by brushing away loose debris with a soft bristle brush and applying a coat of clear microcrystalline wax to seal the metal and prevent rust formation.
