Description

Antique Victorian Mahogany Chest of Drawers (c. 1870–1890)

Add timeless elegance to your home with this original Victorian chest of drawers, crafted from solid mahogany in the late 19th century. This beautiful piece showcases the simple, classical lines typical of the era and offers both aesthetic charm and functional storage.

This chest dates from around 1870 to 1890 and is made from solid mahogany, possibly Cuban or Honduran. It features four full-width drawers, each with turned wooden knobs and cockbeaded drawer fronts. The drawers are constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, a hallmark of quality craftsmanship. The chest stands on its original turned bun feet and has a rich, warm patina with a traditional finish.

The condition is good overall, with minor surface wear and age-related marks consistent with its age. There are a few light scuffs and small shrinkage cracks but the structure is solid and the drawers run smoothly.

Victorian chests from the 19th century typically feature solid proportions, rich timber grains, and often incorporate hand-turned wooden knobs and cockbeaded drawer edges.

These pieces were constructed predominantly from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, utilizing hand-cut dovetail joints for drawer construction.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut dovetailing, timber shrinkage cracks, old secondary woods on drawer linings, and natural patina resulting from age and use.

This piece can serve as a functional focal point in a modern bedroom or hallway, contrasting clean architectural lines with rich, warm wood tones.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, applying traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the surface.
