Description

(XX) Continental School Painting of the Virgin and Child, After Pompeo Batoni (1708–1787)

Period: Early 20th century Continental School

Title: The Madonna with Child

Medium: Oil on panel

Artist: After Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787)

Provenance: from a UK auction house and private UK collection .

Overall measurements with the frame are 57 cm x 46 cm x 5 cm and the painting itself measuring 39 cm x 29 cm

A 20th century, oil on wooden panel painting in the classical style and after the painting by Pompeo Batoni which is housed in the Galería Borghese.

Batoni's style took inspiration and incorporated elements of classical antiquity, French Rococo, Bolognese classicism, and the work of artists such as Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, and especially Raphael. As such, Pompeo Batoni is considered a precursor of Neoclassicism.

This early 20th century painting follows the original one very tastefully in our opinion.

Condition report: We have removed the painting from its original frame and the glass and refitted into the same frame. The painting appears to have never been removed from the frame and is in excellent original condition.

Date of Manufacture

Westcoast Fine Art has dated this Continental School Painting to the 1920s.

Continental School paintings refer to artworks produced in mainland Europe outside of Britain, often characterised by classical training, academic precision, and adherence to established compositional techniques of the period.

These works typically utilise oil paints applied to canvas or wood panels, framed within hand-carved, gessoed, and gilded wooden mouldings characteristic of European craftsmanship.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas age, stretcher frame construction, pigment composition, craquelure patterns, and any underlying artist signatures or workshop stamps.

Such a piece can serve as a striking focal point above a mantelpiece or console table, creating a sophisticated juxtaposition when paired with minimalist modern furnishings and neutral wall tones.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and cleaning only with professional conservation methods.
