Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This Georgian antique English pewter ships inkwell dates from circa 1800. The piece has a silver grey colour with a polished finish all over, showing traces of oxide, a brass hinge, and a broad flared capstan base with a pivoted system. The domed lid swings open to expose the original glass liner, which remains in place inside the metal body. Measuring 9 cm high by 15 cm wide and 15 cm deep, the item functions well on an office desk or library table for everyday correspondence. It suits a traditional study or a collector workspace, providing a historical accessory for writing desks.

FAQs

A ships inkwell is a desk implement designed with a broad, weighted capstan or bell-shaped base to prevent tipping while at sea during maritime travel.

Georgian period inkwells were commonly cast from pewter, brass, or silver, often featuring internal liners made of clear or dark glass to hold liquid ink.

Authentic pieces generally display touchmarks or makers marks stamped into the metal, irregular casting marks, natural surface patination, and evidence of hand-finishing.

These functional objects serve as accent pieces on modern executive desks, study bookshelves, or styled alongside leather-bound volumes and stationery.

Pewter should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and cleaned using warm water with mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives that strip natural oxidisation.
