FAQs

Nineteenth century marine painting focuses heavily on maritime subjects, including ships at sea, coastal scenes, and naval engagements, often reflecting the romanticism and realism movements of the period.

These artworks were typically executed using oil paints on stretched linen canvas or wood panels, housed within heavily carved and gilded wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, inspecting the ground layer for appropriate ageing, checking for artist signatures or stamps, and evaluating the construction and wear of the original frame.

An antique marine painting serves as a strong focal point and pairs well with both traditional period spaces and minimalist contemporary rooms to create textural contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment degradation, and keeping the surface free from dust using a soft, dry brush.
