Superb Japanese Meiji (Early 20thc) Copper Articulated (Jizai) Lobster, Souyuki Myochin

1900 - 1920
Description

Intricate Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) copper articulated (jizai) spiny lobster by Souyuki Myochin. The lobster is fully articulated and all body segments including legs, tail, tail fins and antenna have hinged joints and are fully articulated. The scale model is accurately portrayed with all the anatomical characteristics of a real spiny lobster. Signed on the bottom ‘Souyuki Myochin’. Body ca. 18.5cm (40cm incl. antenna), 6cm wide, weight 150g (450g incl. paulownia wooden box).

Excellent condition and patina – no damage or repairs.

The Myôchin school (or family) was a lineage of renowned armourers stretching back to the 12th century, who remained prominent and famed through the Edo (1615-1868) and Meiji (1868-1912) periods. From the 17th century, the production of articulated (jizai) models began in the relatively peaceful Edo era. During this period the master metal craftsmen who made the samurai armour turned to the production of these collectors’ items. Articulated works of art typically represent crustaceans and insects, but also birds, fish, snakes and mythical animals such as dragons.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
