Originating in Renaissance Italy, the credenza was initially a low, long cabinet used in noble households for food tasting to test for poison before serving. Over time, it evolved into a primary storage piece for dining halls, featuring panelled doors and drawers for fine linens and silver.

Italian credenzas are typically constructed from native hardwoods such as walnut, chestnut, or poplar. Traditional joinery includes hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged mortise and tenon frames, and hand-forged iron hardware such as drop handles and lock plates.
