Antique Oil Painting of a Dog Sir Edwin Landseer 1802 - 1873 Circle of 19th Century Follower

19th century
Description

A magnificent and large sized genuine antique 19th century oil painting on canvas, which has recently been relined and restored to museum condition and now ready for display.

This fine example of a large and beautifully painted genuine antique late 19th century Sir Edwin Landseer painting of a handsome dog by water, is offered for sale in exceptional condition and ready for display set within a wooden and gilt frame. The painting is signed with an initial “W” in the bottom left hand corner of the cleaned and relined antique canvas. Although Edwin Landseer did sometimes sign his works with a “W”, we have not had the opportunity to see if this painting could actually be attributed as yet to Sir Edwin Landseer himself, hence we are currently stating this restored well executed canvas is by a follower of Landseer.

This perfectly executed antique restored and professionally cleaned to museum standard oil painting, is by a very accomplished follower and very likely also of the circle of Sir Edwin Landseer. Painted in the late 19th century also, this large and very fine antique restored oil painting was titled by Sir Edwin landseer as 'A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society', study of a Newfoundland.

The measurements for this large restored canvas excluding the frame:

Width: 89.5 cm

Height: 69 cm

The frame adds further width and height and although is pleasant to look at with this fine antique restored canvas, we feel perhaps a more flamboyant baroque or rococo gilt frame would be more appropriate for this wonderful antique 19th century oil painting on a relined canvas.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century British animal painting was marked by detailed realism, narrative depth, and a focus on companion and working dogs. Popularised by artists such as Sir Edwin Landseer, these works emphasised expressiveness and human-like qualities in the subjects.

Paintings from this period were typically executed using oil pigments bound with linseed oil applied onto hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were generally constructed from timber with applied gesso moulding and finished with genuine leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit age-consistent craquelure across the paint surface, natural oxidisation on the timber stretcher bars, and signs of hand-carved or molded gesso framing. The reverse of the canvas often shows dark age-staining rather than bright modern fibres.

An antique oil painting can serve as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantel or positioned on a modern console table. Pairing historical figurative artwork with minimal contemporary furnishings creates a balanced contrast within modern spaces.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, dampness, and sudden temperature fluctuations to prevent timber warping and paint cracking. Surface dust should be removed gently using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush without applying liquids or chemical detergents.
