Description

Early 19th-century miniature 2/3 chest of drawers in mahogany. This piece has short grain around the top with boxwood inlay. The drawers are banded in ebony with ebony excursions. With Dutch drop handles and reeded mold around the bottom, it stands on bun feet. On the bottom and inside of the drawer it is written Belfast 30th July 1824. This is in copper plate and looks original to me.

Miniature chests of drawers from the 18th and 19th centuries were often crafted as apprentice pieces to demonstrate a cabinetmakers skill, or as salesman samples to showcase furniture styles to prospective clients.

These items are typically constructed using fine dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, turned brass handles, and occasionally inlaid stringing.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, appropriate timber shrinkage, genuine patina on the hardware, and secondary woods consistent with the geographic region and era of origin.

A miniature chest serves as an effective focal point when placed upon a sideboard, desk, or mantelpiece, functioning as a sophisticated display piece or a practical container for small items like jewellery.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and apply occasional applications of quality beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
