Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian oak chests date from the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), an era marked by industrial advancement combined with traditional craftsmanship. Furniture from this period frequently utilised sturdy native timbers like English oak to create functional, hard-wearing domestic storage pieces.

Pieces from around 1890 were typically constructed using solid timber frameworks with hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes. Turn-of-the-century craftsmen often incorporated turned wooden knobs, linings of secondary softwoods, and panelled sides to ensure structural stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, irregular grain patterns consistent with quarter-sawn oak, and period-appropriate fixings such as brass or wooden key escutcheons. Examination of the drawer linings and backboards typically reveals older tool marks and natural oxidisation absent in modern reproductions.

Pairing a dark wood period chest with minimalist surroundings creates a balanced, layered aesthetic that grounds modern spaces. It functions effectively as a focal storage unit in a bedroom or hallway, topped with simple ceramic vases or framed artwork.

Maintain antique oak by placing it away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber splitting and fading. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply occasional coats of traditional beeswax to nourish the wood finish.
