Rare Ecclesiastical Carved Wood (Oak) Statue of Saint John with Eagle. Circa 1750. Possibly earlier.

Fine representation of St. John the Evangelist depicted with an eagle, his symbolic animal. The statue shows a figure holding a book in one hand and gesturing with the other, with an eagle perched beside him. This iconography is commonly associated with St. John*.

Condition: Very good condition. Old woodworm (fully treated), testament to authenticity and age. Provided with stand (and hanging loop to rear).

Dimensions of figure (approx):

Height (without stand) = 60cm

Height (with stand) = 75cm

Width = 30cm

Depth = 25cm

*St. John the Evangelist is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and is traditionally credited with writing the Gospel of John, three epistles, and the Book of Revelation in the Bible. The eagle symbol is derived from interpretations of his writings, particularly the soaring, spiritual nature of the Gospel of John.
