Toby jugs originated in 18th-century England and were adopted by continental potteries, including Dutch manufacturers in Delft. These vessels depict full-bodied figures, often holding a mug or sitting down, and serve as functional drinkware or decorative table pieces.

Delftware is made from earthenware clay coated with a lead glaze containing tin oxide, producing an opaque white background. Patterns are hand-painted onto the unfired tin glaze using metallic oxides, predominantly cobalt blue, before final firing.

Authentic pieces feature visible hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities in the cobalt pigment, natural glaze crazing, and soft wear around the foot rim or handle. Makers marks or initials painted on the underside also help determine age and origin.
