Description

Excellent Italian (?) antique (late 19thC) bronze bust of a child on a marble base. Signed on the base but cannot read it. 17.5cm high (including base), base 11.5cm x 11cm, weight 2.6kg.

Lovely original condition and patina.

It is in the manner of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783), a German-Austrian sculptor who was renowned for his expressive and enigmatic series of busts known as character heads. His works have captivated collectors for centuries with their intense emotional expressions and psychological depth.
