Mid-18th-century English School, Portrait of a Lady - Antique Oil Painting

18th century
Description

This charming mid-18th-century English oil painting depicts a middle-aged lady reputed to be ‘Meg Worthington’.

Produced during the rather ostentatious Rococo period, this lady, despite her mature years, is attired in a fine, rather fashionable ensemble. With themes of love, leisure and nature, the Rococo was defined by its extravagance and, simultaneously, its elegance. Outfits often featured pastel colours, as we see here with the cloak, and women accessorised extensively with bows, ribbons, caps, and various lace trimmings. Gowns tended to be silk, either plain or brocaded. The black bow likely indicates that she’s recently bereaved.

‘Meg Worthington’ is presumably short for Margaret Worthington and could relate to the historic Lancastrian family by that name, which are traceable to the 13th century. Following an ancestry search, we’ve discovered numerous Margaret Worthingtons with plausible birthdates. The family seat was Worthington Hall at Standish.

Held in a later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 30½” x 35½” / 77cm x 90cm
