Mirror back sideboards gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, evolving from simple serving tables into elaborate display pieces that reflected light and showcased fine tableware.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid oak, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, inset mirror plates, and brass or cast-metal hardware.

Authenticity can be determined by examining construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints, tool marks on the timber, oxidisation on the mirror backing, and natural wear patterns consistent with age.

Pair the dark wood with minimalist surrounding decor, neutral wall colours, and contemporary lighting to create a striking focal point that balances traditional craftsmanship with modern simplicity.

Maintain antique oak by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding extreme temperature fluctuations, and periodically applying a quality beeswax to nourish and protect the wood finish.
