Aneroid barometers, which use a sealed flexible metal box rather than liquid mercury to measure atmospheric pressure, became widely popular during the Victorian era following their invention in the mid-19th century, allowing for more durable and portable weather instruments.

These instruments typically feature cases crafted from domestic and imported hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing a brass bezel, a paper or enamel dial, and delicate steel indicator hands.

Authenticity is generally indicated by period-appropriate typography on the enamel dial, maker signatures from reputable nineteenth-century firms, heavy cast brass bezels, and traditional joinery or construction methods on the wooden housing.

This piece can be mounted on a panelled hallway wall or integrated into a traditional study gallery wall alongside framed prints and vintage mirrors to add textural warmth and historic character.

To preserve the timber and mechanical components, keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture fluctuations, occasionally dusting the wood with a dry microfibre cloth without using harsh chemical polishes.
