St Mary’s Church, Scarborough Oil Painting By Frederick Dade

An interesting oil on canvas of Saint Mary’s Church and Churchyard, Scarborough by Frederick Dade 1874-1908. The painting is worked in thick impasto oils with an impressionist feel. The scene shows the church at sunset with birds flying in to roost in the tower. The churchyard is already cast in darkness with a few yellow flowers adding colour to the shadows. It is an incredibly atmospheric work with a gothic feel and yet also a great sense of peace. The work is signed to the lower left Fred Dade and dated 1895. Frederick Dade was born in Scarborough in 1874. He studied at Scarborough School of Art under Albert Strange and was among the prize winners in 1891 and 1892. He carried on working and exhibiting in this area and also has pictures in important collections including the National Maritime Museum and Scarborough Museum.
