Description

Quite probably used for containing spindles and/or water-pipes, this magnificent bag was woven in soumak technique on both sides, by Afshar nomads in Kerman province, southern Persia during the last quarter of the nineteenth century.

Utilitarian bags like this are now a rarity amongst the nomads and I feel it is our responsibility to preserve such nomadic works of woven art, which appear to be of little interest in their country of origin, sadly. The bag is in excellent condition and retains its tassels on the side and bottom symbolising good luck.
