A Late 19th Century Chinese Carved Hardwood Figure with Mythical Creature.

1900 - 1920
Description

A well carved Chinese hardwood figure group depicting a plump traditionally dressed Chinese man seated on a rocky shelf laughing and happily teasing and feeding a coin to a mythical creature. This carving has been cleverly worked using the natural light and dark grain in the block of hardwood for Different parts of the figure group. The figures are mostly in the lighter wood and the rocky base shelf and his robe which mainly hangs to his sides and back are in the darker grained timber. This would have taken great skill to work out the positioning before starting to carve the group. His teeth have been carved and inlaid in bone. This piece is in good condition. There are a few very minor shrinkage cracks. It has a nicely polished patination and is signed on the underside with Chinese character marks. Circa 1900

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Qing dynasty, carved hardwood figures frequently depicted mythological subjects, folklore figures, or Taoist immortals symbolising good fortune, wealth, and longevity.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense native hardwoods such as zitan, hongmu, or boxwood, employing hand chisels to carve figures from solid blocks, followed by waxing and polishing.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks, natural age-related shrinkage cracks along the grain, and deep patination acquired from decades of handling and wax polishing.

Place the sculpture on a minimalist console table, within a curated bookcase, or on a mantelpiece alongside understated contemporary ceramics to create visual balance.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and moisture fluctuations. Dust regularly with a soft dry brush and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly when necessary.
