Description

A wonderful collectors item, this beautiful old Kazak has had a tough life but behind the wear, you can see the pedigree is great. I would date this rug to the mid 19th century, judging by the red wefts and soft, floppy weave. A really great type rarely found on the market today in any condition. Can still serve as floor covering in a guest bedroom or other light traffic area but ideally it would be pinned on your wall and admired. A lot of bang for the buck, as our American cousins put it.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Karachopf Kazak rugs are a distinctive sub-type of Caucasian rugs traditionally woven by village weavers in the Southern Caucasus region during the 19th century, characterized by their bold geometric medallions and saturated primary colours.

Authentic antique Kazak rugs are constructed using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, warp, and weft, dyed with natural vegetable and insect-derived colourants, and woven with a symmetrical or asymmetrical knot structure.

Authenticity is identified by examining the natural irregularities in the hand-spun wool, the presence of vegetable dyes with abrash colour variations, wool foundation threads, and traditional Caucasian geometric motifs rather than synthetic materials or machine finishing.

An antique tribal rug can be styled as a grounding focal point in contemporary, minimalist, or eclectic spaces, pairing rich geometric patterns with clean-lined modern furniture and neutral upholstery to balance visual weight.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional hand-washing by specialists in antique textiles every few years, and protection from direct sunlight to prevent natural dye fading.
