Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. This Victorian Neoclassical sculpture presents an off-white plaster water carrier depicted as a standing female figure with her hair styled in an updo and draped in classical garments, leaning forward to tend a pedestal basin supported by a sturdy plinth. The piece stands at 124 cm high on a rectangular green display base, showing country house condition with weathered textures and aged patination across the surfaces. Placed in an empty corner, the statue serves as a striking focal point for a traditional interior, drawing the eye with its sculptural drapery, intricate hairstyle, and classical form. Positioned against a dark wall beneath a framed portrait, the sculpture integrates well into living rooms, hallways, or libraries seeking architectural presence. The figure's outstretched arms grip the shallow stone-effect bowl of the basin, creating a balanced silhouette that anchors the surrounding space. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the porous plaster finish over time. This atmospheric work brings period character to a home without requiring complex maintenance.

FAQs

Classical water carrier statues represent allegorical or mythological female figures holding jugs or basins, popularised during the Neoclassical movement to emulate Greco-Roman sculpture.

These sculptures were produced by pouring liquid plaster of Paris into multi-piece waste moulds or piece moulds, often incorporating internal metal armatures for structural reinforcement.

Authentic period plaster exhibits faint seam lines from original multi-part moulds, soft hand-tooled finishing along drapery edges, and natural surface patination or light pitting.

Position the figure as a structural focal point in an empty corner, entry foyer, or alcove, allowing its textured architectural silhouette to contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Maintain plaster pieces in dry indoor environments and remove accumulated dust using only a soft, clean brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water which can soften the material.
