A compensated pocket barometer is a portable meteorological instrument fitted with a bimetallic strip to adjust for temperature changes, ensuring accurate atmospheric pressure and altitude readings.

These instruments typically feature a brass or gilt metal casing, a glass dial cover, a fine paper or enamelled dial scale, and are usually housed in a leather-covered carrying case lined with silk or velvet.

Authentic pieces generally display maker signatures etched onto the dial or inner case lid, hand-engraved scale graduations, and natural wear consistent with age, such as mild oxidisation on the brass.

This type of instrument can be displayed on a bookshelf alongside leather-bound books or placed on a study desk as a focal point of historical interest.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent internal condensation and degradation of the delicate metal components and paper dials.
