Charles Gregory was a British painter of genre and historical subjects, and also an illustrator. He worked primarily in watercolour.

Gregory was born in London on 24 March 1850 and later studied art at the Royal Academy Schools there. Although he spent most of his life in England it is known that he spent some of his youth in Australia, where he painted numerous watercolours of ships and also drew native birds.

Gregory spent some time living and painting the south coast and in 1887 mounted an exhibition under the title Summertime on the South Coast from Rye (in Sussex) to Penzance (in Cornwall) at Dowdeswells Gallery in New Bond Street, London, which was the culmination of some years’ work. It is possible that the work offered here formed part of that exhibition due to its age and the proximity of the subject matter to the coast.

Gregory continued to exhibit successfully, with several works exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1877onwards. Exhibitions of his work were also held in Liverpool and Melbourne. He was elected an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1882 and became a full member in 1883.

After 1890 he lived in Ripley, then Godalming in Surrey, and then in Marlow-on-Thames, Buckinghamshire, where he died on 21 October 1920, aged 72.

Today, his works capture the beauty and romance of a world gone by with a lightness of touch. An example of his word is held at the Bristol City Art Gallery.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape watercolour paintings typically focus on detailed depictions of the British countryside, emphasizing natural light, atmospheric effects, and regional topography.

Artists utilized water-soluble pigments bound with gum arabic applied to handmade cotton rag paper, often mounted within protective timber frames under glass.

Authenticity is indicated by period paper age tones, artist signatures, traditional mounting techniques, and period-appropriate framing hardware.

Position the framed artwork above a sideboard or console to establish a refined focal point that integrates historic art into contemporary living spaces.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintain stable ambient humidity, and utilize UV-filtering glass to preserve pigment stability over time.
