FAQs

Maintain antique walnut by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.

Positioning a period commode against a neutral wall allows its traditional craftsmanship and timber grain to stand out, pairing effectively with minimalist contemporary art or modern lighting to create contrast.

Authenticity is assessed through structural indicators such as hand-sawn timber marks, old hand-forged iron or brass fixings, natural shrinkage cracks in the wood, and period-appropriate joinery techniques.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid oak or pine carcases veneered in figured timbers such as walnut, accompanied by hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged framing, and cast bronze or brass mounts.

Eighteenth-century French commodes evolved from heavy baroque forms into lighter, more refined neoclassical designs, often featuring breakfront profiles, delicate parquetry, and restrained classical proportions.
