A scarce Baluch dastarkhan or sofreh (eating cloth) these were placed on the ground for food to be served on.
Circa 1920.
This excellent example was woven by the Baluch tribes of southern Afghanistan in the region around Farah, due to its large size and ornate decoration it was probably woven for a special occasion such as a wedding, enabling a large group of people to sit around it and eat. The sofreh is flatwoven with various designs and decorated with multiple bands of weft work.
The sofreh is in excellent condition with very slight wear.
The sofreh is suitable for normal domestic use as a kilim, or would an excellent large wall hanging.
