Description

Here we have a rare Folk art Maritime oil painting on artist board c1900. As you can see the painting has great colour and patina. The carved wooden frame is formed in the shape of a lifebouy ring with rope attachments. The central painting is of a steam fishing boat and probably a Herring drifter c1900. The picture came from Suffolk and these boats were synonymous with Lowestoft so it may have come from there. A super piece in great retail condition ready for your home. The dimensions are approx 30 cm wide 30 cm high 3 cm deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. FAQs

Edwardian folk art maritime paintings are self-taught or provincial artworks depicting ships, coastal scenes, and sea life, often created by sailors or local artisans during the early twentieth century.

These pieces typically utilised canvas, wood, or board for the painting substrate, frequently housed in unconventional frames crafted from reclaimed materials such as cork, rope, and painted wood.

Authentic pieces exhibit genuine age-related wear, period-appropriate pigments, hand-mixed oil or watercolour paints, and original framing techniques consistent with the early 1900s.

Pair this artwork with neutral walls, natural textures like linen and weathered wood, and minimalist furnishings to allow the distinctive frame and historical narrative to serve as a focal point.

Keep the artwork out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintain stable indoor humidity levels to protect the paint and frame, and gently dust with a soft, dry brush without using chemical cleaners.
