An Admiral FitzRoy barometer is a type of weather-glass instrument developed in the 19th century by Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy, designed to predict approaching storms using chemical reactions and atmospheric pressure.

Victorian barometers commonly feature solid timber cases such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing glass mercury tubes, paper printed scales, and brass fittings.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-printed paper scales with Victorian typography, mercury-filled glass tubes, and natural oxidisation on the brass components.

An antique barometer can be mounted as a focal point on a library or hallway wall to add vertical interest, tactile timber texture, and a sense of historic scholarly charm.

Maintain the piece by dusting the wooden case with a dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight or moisture fluctuations that could damage the historic paper face and timber.
