This original watercolour is a study in blues! It depicts two Norwegian sailing vessels, or barques, at anchor a short distance from the Lyme Bay coastline. The nearest vessel is flying the Norwegian flag on its main mast; the flag is red with an indigo blue Scandinavian cross edged in white. There are half a dozen figures on board the vessel, some attending to the rigging. There is a small rowing boat attached to its stern, with a single figure on board. There are no sails on the masts of either boat, and we feel that they are at rest. The sea is calm, a myriad of blues and purple greys, and the vast sky above echoes the colours between the white clouds. There is a slight swell on the sea, but the peaceful with a good sense of perspective.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian maritime watercolours typically focus on realistic depictions of sailing vessels, coastal waters, and atmospheric weather conditions. Artists from this era captured working sea vessels, documenting specific merchant ships, naval craft, and regional coastlines with fine topographical detail.

Nineteenth-century artists utilised water-soluble pigments applied to heavy cotton rag or paper. These paintings were traditionally mounted behind protective glass within wooden frames to prevent moisture damage and dust accumulation on the delicate paper substrate.

Authenticity is assessed by examining artist signatures, age-appropriate paper oxidisation, and historical accuracy in vessel rigging and flag details. Provenance, period frame construction, and natural ageing marks on the paper support attribution.

A maritime artwork creates a classic focal point when positioned above a sideboard, fireplace mantel, or desk. Pairing the muted tones of traditional sea paintings with neutral walls or timber panelling adds depth to contemporary spaces.

Display watercolour art away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and paper foxing. Ensure the artwork is mounted using acid-free materials and UV-filtering glass to protect the delicate pigments over time.
