FAQs

French Provincial furniture originated in the 17th and 18th centuries in regions like Provence and Normandy, created by local craftsmen who adapted ornate Parisian court styles into simpler, more functional pieces suited for provincial homes.

These pieces traditionally utilise solid regional timbers such as cherry, oak, or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged construction, and cast brass or bronze hardware fitted to the drawer fronts.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetailing, shrinkage cracks in the timber, and hand-cast metal hardware with natural oxidisation patterns consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

A traditional wooden commode adds warmth and character to contemporary spaces when contrasted with minimalist walls, paired with modern abstract art above, or balanced with sleek lighting fixtures.

Preserve antique cherry wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and applying occasional coats of traditional beeswax to nourish the timber.
