The chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, emerged in the late 17th century and became particularly popular during the Georgian era. It was designed to maximise vertical storage space in bedrooms while offering a formal, architectural aesthetic.

Period pieces were predominantly constructed from solid homegrown timber such as oak or walnut, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, deal secondary woods for drawer linings, and pegged frame elements.

Authenticity is identified by examining hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate brass hardware or filled handle holes, hand-planed drawer bottoms, and consistent oxidation matching the stated age.

An antique tallboy provides a strong focal point in a contemporary setting by contrasting against neutral walls. It can be left unadorned to showcase the grain or paired with minimalist lighting and curated ceramic objects on top.

Maintain antique oak by placing it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Periodically feed the wood with traditional beeswax and avoid silicone-based polishes.
