Description

One of the best 18thc pewter chargers I have bought in a long time....this imposing one was made by Russell Laugher of Worcester, who worked from around 1740 and died in 1751....the charger is very well marked to the reverse with his full set of very clear touch marks, along with a London touch and ownership initials 'SB'.....it is always pleasing to see the bouge of the plate showing the visible clear hammer marks.....in excellent condition with a fine natural patina...

A pewter charger is a large circular metal plate used historically for serving food or as a base plate during formal dining in elite households before the widespread use of porcelain.

Pewter from this era is an alloy primarily composed of tin, often hardened with small amounts of copper or lead, typically shaped by casting in moulds and finished by hand hammering on a lathe.

Authentic pieces often feature makers marks or hallmarks stamped into the metal, subtle surface imperfections from hand crafting, and a characteristic dark grey oxidisation known as patina.

These pieces can be displayed vertically using plate stands on a mantelpiece or mounted on a wall to introduce industrial texture and historic metallic tones to a contemporary space.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding aggressive commercial metal polishes, which can strip the historic patina and damage the soft metal alloy.
