Cotswold Oriental Rugs has dated this piece to the 1900s.
Antique salt-bag by the Kurds of north west Persia.
Circa 1900.
This salt-bag is in piled weave with traditional boteh design often found on Kurdish bags and rugs. The bag is complete with a decorative plain striped plain weave back. Salt-bags were used by the nomads to store and carry rock salt, both for their own use and for their animals; salt was a very valuable item and it therefore deserved to be stored in these beautiful bags which are usually so tightly woven as to be almost waterproof.
The salt bag is in good condition with some wear caused by tribal use.
The bag face has been hand washed and is ready for display.
