FAQs

Painting on metal supports, particularly tin or iron sheet, gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as an accessible and durable alternative to canvas or wood panels, often utilised by itinerant artists for smaller-scale works.

These works typically comprise thin sheets of iron or tin as the paint support, oil-based pigments, and elaborate frames constructed from wood and gesso with gold leaf or metallic gilding.

Authenticity is usually determined by inspecting the metal substrate for signs of oxidisation, assessing the craquelure and chemical composition of the oil paint, and examining the construction and ageing of the frame and backing boards.

They work effectively when hung on dark or neutral walls to accentuate the gilt frames, or layered on a mantelpiece or shelf to introduce historical depth and character to modern spaces.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity and temperature control to prevent the metal substrate from expanding or rusting, alongside protection from direct sunlight to safeguard the oil pigments.
