FAQs

A silhouette portrait is a profile likeness cut from black paper or painted on card, popularised in the 18th and 19th centuries before the widespread availability of photography.

Traditional frames for miniature silhouettes were frequently constructed from pressed papier-mache, wood, or cast brass, often featuring decorative brass hangers or bezels.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-correct materials such as convex glass, early paper stock showing natural ageing, and hand-cut or hand-painted profiles rather than modern print reproductions.

These small-scale artworks work effectively when grouped in a gallery wall arrangement or hung in narrow wall spaces to add historical depth and intimate focal points.

Preserve them by keeping them away from direct sunlight to prevent paper fading and adhesive degradation, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels to protect the antique framing materials.
