FAQs

Miniature portraits gained widespread popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as a portable and intimate way to commemorate family members or public figures, often preceding the widespread adoption of photography.

These works were typically executed on thin sheets of paper, card, vellum, or prepared ivory, using fine watercolour pigments applied with miniature sable brushes.

Authentic period pieces display period-appropriate pigments, hand-cut substrates with natural edge ageing, and often historical framing materials such as brass bezels or convex glass.

Grouping small antique portraits together on a narrow wall space or displaying one on a small easel creates a curated focal point that adds historical depth to modern rooms.

Watercolour pigments are sensitive to ultraviolet light and high humidity, so they should be displayed away from direct sunlight in stable environmental conditions behind conservation-grade glass.
