This nineteenth-century cold painted bronze sculpture portrays a young Arab girl leaning against an Egyptian-style wall with carved hieroglyphs, a winged sun disc, and a lotus capital, holding a water jug in her left hand. Modelled in an Orientalist style by the French sculptor J. Guillot, the piece exhibits warm brown patination with gilded accents on the headdress, beaded necklace, and architectural elements. The maiden wears draped robes and stands barefoot upon a rectangular base. Measuring 80 cm high by 37 cm wide and 29 cm deep, this nineteenth-century bronze sculpture suits placement on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library. It brings sculptural detail and historical interest to an interior surface.

FAQs

Orientalist sculpture emerged in 19th-century Europe, particularly in France, driven by fascination with Middle Eastern, North African, and Egyptian cultures. Artists depicted classical figures, water bearers, and architectural motifs characterized by detailed costume drapery and textured surfaces.

These sculptures were typically cast using the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting methods. They feature varied patination techniques, combining dark brown or black bronze finishes with cold-painted or gilded accents to highlight drapery and jewellery details.

Authentic pieces generally display an incised artist signature, foundry stamps, and crisp casting definition around fine details like hands, clothing folds, and faces. Natural wear to the patina, expected weight, and seamless joints indicate age.

Position the sculpture on a marble mantelpiece, dark wood sideboard, or dedicated pedestal to act as a focal point. Pair it with directional spot lighting to highlight the metallic depth and relief details against a neutral wall backdrop.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or natural bristle brush. To preserve the original patina and prevent oxidisation, apply a thin coat of microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently.
