FAQs

The Victorian pedestal sideboard style emerged in the 19th century, featuring dual pedestal cabinets supporting a central work surface and an ornate mirrored or panelled backboard, designed primarily for formal dining rooms.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid secondary timbers such as oak or mahogany, overlaid with highly figured decorative wood veneers like burr walnut, mahogany flame, or coromandel to create rich visual patterns.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate construction methods, including hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, traditional timber shrinkage cracks, old-growth wood grain patterns, and historically accurate brass or wooden hardware.

Pairing a richly grained wooden sideboard with minimalist walls and modern lighting creates a striking balance, allowing the historic craftsmanship to serve as a focal point without overwhelming the space.

Maintain burr walnut furniture by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and cracking, applying occasional high-quality beeswax to nourish the wood.
